"They say the truth can set you free. I found out it can kill you."
Seventeen-year-old Kat Matheson has never revealed the dark secret that sets her apart from everyone else: She can see and hear the dead. Until now, she has been able to ignore the strange apparitions and whispering voices. But it may not be that simple anymore. Haunted by eerie visions and increasingly frightening nightmares, Kat begins to fear she may be the target of a dark and ominous force from beyond the grave. Complicating matters is the arrival of her new neighbor, a young man she instinctively distrusts but is inexplicably drawn to. Gorgeous and mysterious, he seems to hold a disturbing knowledge of her long-held secrets.
As she desperately tries to maintain control, events take an unexpected and violent turn. Discovering that nothing is what it seems and that her psychic abilities may involve far more than just communing with the dead, Kat may be forced to confront her worst fears and the powerful curse that controls her destiny.
Review
Reckoning is an enchanting, easy to read book with a touch of the paranormal. I really liked Halls writing and the pacing of the book. I didn't like that it ended on a cliffhanger.. which I will definitely be reading the second book. I was intrigued with the paranormal aspect of this book, Kat is not your run of the mill ghost seer, she's special.. important. Why? That's something we'll find out.
Cover and writing style
I love the cover it draws you in. (I like dark, creepy covers!) I especially like that the girl on the cover is a good visual for the character. The writing style is great, a little over descriptive, but she uses current vocabulary and the story is told from Kat's POV.
Main Character
I can relate to Kat, she has struggled with normalcy since she was born (you know.. seeing ghosts and all). Because of that, she's kind of a loaner and a tad bit awkward. She also loves antiques and watched Antiques Roadshow, which is a plus in my book!
Swoonworthy points: 7
Reckoning has the making of a love triangle, though it's not quite there. Kat had been swooning over Rick all school year, and he finally asked her out the last day of school. A new neighbor moves in, Lovell who always manages to be at the right place, at the right time. She finds him creeptastic, but intrigued as well. Both men are equally attractive!
I recommend this book if you're in the mood for a bit of adventure, romance, and mystery.
